The Truth About Pregnancy

Over the course of the past nine weeks, I've about decided that many of my friends are just big fat liers! That's right...I mean, I had no reason not to believe them when they said, "Oh, I just loved being pregnant!" Well, folks, the truth should no longer be masked. I can't take it anymore!! So here goes, like it or not, the truth about pregnancy, unedited, unaltered, unabashed.

1. You get sick. No, not this whole "morning sickness" thing...what in the world is that?! I mean, the anytime-your-awake sickness. This dull yuckiness that never leaves your side. Mind you it is reminding continually of the miracle inside you, which is sweet, but only for those of you (husbands, moms, friends) who are NOT experiencing it!

2. You wish God would take away your sense of smell! I used to LOVE candles..I had them all over my house even in my classroom at school. But now such things make you, well refer back to #1. Common smells you think nothing about, that you used to like, become the dreaded enemy...things like toothpaste, peppermint, white tea/ginger shower gel, perfume, all good things in and of themselves, hiding like wolves in sheeps clothing to a pregnant woman.

3. They don't tell you this, but being pregnant is like going on a mean diet. At least a diet from all your little "vices." Coffee - out. Gum - out (see #2). Diet coke, Sweet-n-low - out, out. Mind you this will surely be good for me in the long run, as we of course are wanting little peanut as healthy as can be...but no fun for mom in the meantime!

3. You get fat. Yeah, I thought, how cute to get a little baby bump. Well, at about 9 weeks pregnant you don't feel cute...you feel fat! Is it baby? Is it just a fat pooch? I don't know, but no woman likes to see her pants get tight!! Uhhhhggg.

4. You want to SLEEEEEP. Now, I do LOVE me some sleep, so you wouldn't think this would be a bad thing. And it's not....as long as you CAN sleep. Like after school, oh the joy to go home and take a nap on the couch! Wonderful! But right now, in the middle of the day, when all I want to do is go home and curl up in my bed, but instead I have 6 more hours to be "Mrs. Forman" to 4th graders...I get tired just thinking about it.

5. People tell you things like, "You're face looks a little swolen today." ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? Never, ever tell a pregnant lady her face looks swolen, even if it does! It's like telling someone they look "tired." How in the world does this help anyone?

Okay, I think I've vented enough. I feel a little better having the truth told and put it out there. I really am happy to be a mom-to-be, and so thankful for this little baby growing inside me, but I do find some solice in sheer, brutal honesty. I hold out hope that one day I will be one of those moms who says, "Oh, I just loved being pregnant!"

Well, friend, I truthfully think some women don't experience some of what you're experiencing...but I'm sure I'll be right there with you when my time comes. Thanks for the honest picture of the sacrifices...helps be be okay with NOT being pregnant right now! Okay, that wasn't helpful, sorry. Love you and praying for you and the little peanut!

You are hilarous!!! I am laughing out loud :o). So here's what I'm praying for you...that next time, you'll get one of those "dream pregnancies" and see that not all of us were lying. In the meantime, we'll just have to endure these cruel little side effects together. I think God must have thought I had it a little too easy the first time :o)... and He must think you are a stud that CAN handle it the first time :o)!

I'm with you. I did not really enjoy being pregnant...just the end result! It did get better for me the 2nd trimester, so hold out for that! Also, the bella band is great for those snug pants...they have them at motherhood maternity. Hang in there friend!

And......if you do hold out and tell me how much you loved being pregnant (yes, by the time I have kids, you might have forgotten) I'll remind you of this little post. Love you.

Hilarious...I can totally relate with lots of that. I loved coffee, and then when I got pregnant the smell suddenly made me ill...very sad! Don't worry, it does and will get better...usually after the first trimester. Praying for you and your family.

Sharee...this was hilarious! I mean, to you maybe not. But to one who has never experienced it, and reading from someone whose been told countless times how awesome pregnancy is, it's quite comical. I'll try and remember your side when and if I ever hit this milestone:)

Hey friend! So, yeah...I identified with EVERYTHING you said (esp. the smells & toothpaste). I remember every moment of my first trimester just wishing I could throw up so that I'd feel better for just a little bit...but it never happened. Then, the 1st day of my 2nd trimester, it stopped! From that moment on, it was WONDERFUL!! I'm one of those you spoke of who loved being pregnant....guess you kind of end up forgetting it all once you get to hold that sweet baby of yours! Hopefully, that will be your story as well!! Great post! You're so funny Sharee! Praying for you! :o)

sharee,
welcome to pregnancy! heehee!
the good news is, or at least i think, you will probably feel better around 13 weeks. your belly will take a cute little shape instead of a questionable one and you will return to your usual "likings'. i think the first 10 weeks are the weirdest--it gets more merry :)

I love your honestly, and I too am going to be honest. I hated every second of being pregnant, and often felt like a horribly selfish person for feeling that way. I hated being sick ALL DAY, I hated that I no longer enjoyed eating, how ugly I was when I was pregnant, and how bad my feet/knees/ hips hurt after I got so big. I am not going to tell you that it gets better, but I will tell you that it is ALL worth it! No matter how much I hated it the first time, that memory has faded and I am ready to do it again. Hang in there...soon you will have a precious baby to show for all your hard work!!

I had a ROUGH first trimester too!! NO FUN AT ALL (sick, tired, sick, tired, worried about minor problems...did I mention SICK), then it was like the light switch fliped and ALL BETTER :)then came the THIRD trimester...I absolutely HATED getting in bed because I was sooo uncomfortable (probably from all the weight I gained :) Then came Mason and those tough times were distant memories.
